Bilal is a physician-by-training and digital health leader passionate about advancing the ethical and inclusive application of AI to improve human lives. He is PATH’s inaugural Chief AI Officer, responsible for developing and implementing the organisation’s AI strategy, advancing first-in-class AI solutions to key health care challenges and strengthening regulatory systems to ensure adequate safeguards for AI in health care.  Prior to his current post at PATH, Bilal served as Executive Director of Digital Square, supporting 33 ministries of health across Africa and Asia in planning, procuring, and implementing digital health technologies to address the global health equity gap. He also brings a keen understanding of the philanthropic ecosystem, having previously led Digital Technology Funding at Wellcome, where his team supported digital public goods addressing mental health, the impact of climate change on human health, and emerging and escalating infectious diseases.

Over the course of his career, he has been the principal investigator on more than $250 million in grants and contracts focused on digital health transformation and AI in low-resource settings, and has held several prestigious fellowships, such as at the Alan Turing Institute – the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. In recognition of his expertise, he now holds multiple professorial appointments (UCL & University of Birmingham), serves on the UK’s National Commission on the Regulation of AI in healthcare, and was recently appointed to the United Nations’ first Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.
