The finalists for The Innovate Awards 2022 have been revealed following a rigorous round of judging over the summer, with Health Innovation East named as a partner in three of the shortlisted projects, with innovation programmes from our region featuring as finalists in nine out of the ten categories.
In its inaugural year, The Innovate Awards is a collaboration between the AHSN Network and NHS Confederation to celebrate excellence in innovation in health and care, showcasing those teams, organisations and health and care systems leading the way in positive change.
The awards saw a grand total of 194 entries from health and care teams across the country covering ten award categories. The ten eventual winners will also compete for Innovation Champion of the Year to be announced on the evening of the award ceremony in September.
Gut Reaction, the Health Data Research Hub for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Patient and Public Involvement in Transformation and Innovation Award.
The project, which is supported by HDRUK and led by the NIHR BioResource, aims to combine health data in the NIHR IBD BioResource with real-world data from participating NHS hospitals and the IBD Registry to support important research into IBD. Health Innovation East’s role has focussed on operational and programme management, coordinating activities across workstreams and project governance including reporting and assurance to our funders.
Just One Norfolk has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Contribution to Population Health Through Innovation Award. This attractive, interactive digital platform is integrated within service delivery of the Norfolk and Waveney Children and Young People’s Health Services. It provides Norfolk’s families and healthcare professionals with a single digital access point to up to date, validated information, support and resources designed to improve a family’s confidence and ability to care for their children (0-19 years old).
Health Innovation East has supported the spread of the platform to cover a broader scope of services and to widen the breadth of users, allowing a growth of resources to support all children and young people across Norfolk.
Health Innovation East and Whzan have been shortlisted under the Enabling Safer Systems of Care Through Innovation category for our work embedding telehealth solutions for remote monitoring in care homes.
With clinicians’ in-person attendance restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a need for care homes to use remote monitoring solutions to communicate health information of their residents with healthcare professionals. Health Innovation East worked with care homes and partners across the region to pilot a digital solution to do so using NEWS2, with support from an Innovate UK grant.
The data collected suggests the programme saved more than £201k in 33 care homes, including a 15.75% reduction in conveyances to hospital.

It has been a delight to see the wonderful efforts taking place in terms of innovation in the health and care sector and it is hugely important to recognise and celebrate this.”
The 43 judges included prominent healthcare figures from NHS England, regional NHS trusts and integrated care boards, universities, patient involvement organisations, health equality organisations and innovation specialists. Read more about the judges on the Awards website.
