The development of a cutting-edge smartphone app and clinician dashboard is providing important insights into patients’ conditions, leading to improved care and cost savings for the NHS.

Championing Neu Health, Health Innovation East introduced the Neu Health team to East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) and the subsequent collaboration is already showcasing significant improvements in patient care and clinic efficiency.

The Neu Health app uses smartphone sensors to track Parkinson’s symptoms including voice, balance, walking, finger dexterity, reaction time, tremor, and cognition. It then uses artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to analyse the sensor information. The results provide clinicians with a comprehensive and longitudinal view of a patient’s condition outside of the clinic environment. The data collected is then presented on a user-friendly dashboard, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed decisions about treatment plans and monitor patient progress effectively.

Working with ESNEFT, Neu Health supported 90 people with Parkinson’s over six months. The technology has shown significant improvements in patient care. 90% of patients experienced enhanced clinical outcomes, while 53% benefited from adjusted care plans based on the app’s data. Additionally, the app has contributed to a 20% efficiency saving for the NHS, demonstrating the potential for substantial cost reductions.

‘We are delighted with the positive outcomes that have been shown through the collaboration between Neu Health and ESNEFT,’ said Louise Jopling, commercial director, at Health Innovation East. ‘This collaboration shows how innovation can be rapidly translated into improved patient care, and how Health Innovation East can help broker the right connections.’

The app’s ability to collect data remotely has been a bonus for patients and clinicians alike. Approximately 50% of patients were considered eligible to conduct follow-up appointments and consultations remotely, improving access to care and helping to reduce the burden on healthcare services.

Neu Health is a ‘spin-out’ from the University of Oxford that builds on 10 years of research and clinical validation. The three organisations have now been shortlisted for a prestigious HSJ Award in the Digitising Patient Care category. The awards will be announced in November 2024.

‘The support from ESNEFT and Health Innovation East has been instrumental in bringing our technology to the NHS,’ said Dr Kinan Muhammed, CMO and co-founder at Neu Health. ‘Their collective expertise has helped accelerate our progress and enabled us to show a real difference made to the lives of people with Parkinson’s.’
