The Adoption and Spread Safety Improvement Programme (A&S-SIP)

A&S-SIP uses the national patient safety programme’s unique position to both identify and then support the spread and adoption of effective and safe, evidence-based interventions and practice across England.

The Adoption and Spread Safety Improvement Programme workstream facilitates and accelerates the pace of adoption making sure that health and care systems are working to ensure more patients benefit from these interventions. The programme focuses on increasing the proportion of eligible patients receiving the following care bundles:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) discharge care bundle

The COPD discharge care bundle contains evidence-based practices using Royal College of Physicians (RCP), British Thoracic Society (BTS), NICE, and the Global Initiative for chronic Obstructive Lung disease (GOLD) standard guidelines. We aim to ensure 80% of eligible patients are benefitting from this bundle by March 2022.Asthma discharge care bundle to 80% by March 2023.

The asthma care bundle

The asthma care bundle is designed to be used primarily for patients discharged from hospital following an acute asthma attack. The bundle can be applied to both adults and children, although special considerations may apply to children under 5 years of age.

The emergency laparotomy care bundle

The emergency laparotomy pathway quality improvement care (ELPQuiC) bundle aims to improve patient outcomes after emergency laparotomy, consisting of evidence-based best practice including: initial assessment with early warning scores, early antibiotics, interval between decision and operation of less than six hours, goal-directed fluid therapy and postoperative intensive care.

Under the A&S-SIP we aim to ensure 90% of eligible patients in our region are benefitting from the bundle by October 2022.

What are NatPatSIPs?

The National Patient Safety Improvement Programmes (NatPatSIPs) support a culture of safety, continuous learning and sustainable improvement across the healthcare system. They are run by the Patient Safety Collaboratives (PSCs), which are funded and nationally coordinated by NHS England and NHS Improvement and hosted locally by the Health Innovation Networks.
